So I'm learning how to sew. I'm taking a class and our project is to make a tote bag. These are the two fabrics I'm using. The birdies are going on the outside and the faux bois is going to be the lining. If all goes well, we might use a Sears gift card to buy this.

the fabric is great. i didn't look at the specs on that machine, but i hope it has a drop-in bobbin. laura, it makes a HUGE different. my singer advance (which was about the same price) is the best machine i've ever used, and i've tried many.

you are gonna kick ass at sewing!

Thanks, Faith! I might actually end up getting this one http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02018221000P?adCell=A3. The reviews for it seem to be more consistent.

why do you think a drop-in bobbin is better?
just curious.
my advice is to get a nice old singer from ebay or somewhere and bring it to someone to give it a tune-up. old singers are workhorses compared to what you can buy today (except for industrials, which i assume you're not considering) and it'll be cheaper too. and greener come to think of it.

I was going to go for the drop-in bobbin because the shop where I took the class recommended it, as did Faith and some other sewer friends in Philly. I guess it's just more user-friendly. My sewing teacher told me that the quality of Singer products has gone downhill in the last few years, so that even if you have an old one, the replacement parts that they are making now are of very low quality. She's a Kenmore girl, though, so maybe there's a bias there.
