today, phaea and i thought we would celebrate one of summer's last days (and my last puppy-free day off) with a few hours at orchard beach followed by some fried seafood on city island. instead, we spent 3 hours in a traffic jam on the van wyck followed by a bathroom break at the target in college point. ah, summer.

one of my most exciting food moments last summer was preparing and eating a watermelon, tomato, and feta salad on labor day. it was my first time enjoying watermelon with salty and savory and was such a revelation. pete doesn't care for melons so the big one i picked up at the farmer's market this weekend is entirely my responsibility. i ate a quarter of it today for lunch...big slices sprinkled with sea salt. if you've never put salt on watermelon, go do it right now and then thank me later.
